Title Petition for a Fugitive

Summary Letter from ìAli���s mawl�� to ìAbd All��h b. Asìad pleading to reconsider his planned punishment of a fugitive. The fugitive had come to the sender who had obtained an am��n for him from a certain Abu al-Munir. Under the threat of being punished by having his beard shaven off he was handed over to the sender of the letter, and his misdeeds were forgiven. The sender then circumcised him. Now the sender has been told that ìAbd All��h has ordered to put the fugitive to the sword and he asks that ìAbd All��h give the fugitive some papers of his own adding that he hopes the letter will benefit the fugitive. The sender ends his letter by sending greetings to ìAbd All��h���s brother. Condition Light brown papyrus. The original cutting lines are preserved on all four sides. There are some small holes in the papyrus. Written with black ink with a thin pen perpendicular to the fibers on Recto. The ink of the top four lines has faded and also in some places at the right half of the papyrus.

APIS Translation (English)

1. In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. ;2. From the mawl�� of ìAli to ìAbd All��h b. Asìad. Peace be upon you and I praise for you God ;3. besides Whom there is no god but He. Further, may God protect us and you from all evil and may He destine as our and your resting place ;4. the paradises of kindness through His mercy. (vac.) ;5. M��rut S����ida? who was a fugitive came to me and I obtained the safe-conduct from Abu al-Munir. ;6. And (then) he wanted to cut his beard and he (handed) him (over) to me and he forgave him, then I circumcised him. He came to me and told me ;7. that you ordered (that he) be put to the sword. So look into, may God protect you and may He be satisfied with me through you, that you give him ;8. some papers from yourself and be nice to him in what God does not destroy your religion through it ;9. nor your good faith (?). I adjure you by God that my letter to you be (not) useless to him. ;10. Give greetings to your brother and peace be upon you and God���s mercy.
