Title Concerning a Loan
Author George the symmachos
Summary Letter from George the symmachos to ìAbd All��h b. As>ad which opens with long blessings and greetings. The long honorifics used by the sender to address ìAbd All��h and the fact that the latter���s name is mentioned first in the address contrary to common practice suggests that ìAbd All��h holds a higher social and administrative position than George. George asks ìAbd All��h to send him one din��r as an advance payment (salaf) with the bearer of the present letter. He then tells ìAbd All��h to write Ab�� Daw��d, who seems to have had something to do with George���s appointment as symmachos. Finally, George asks ìAbd All��h to send him two boys with fruit because there is none available at the sender���s. Condition Light brown papyrus. The original cutting lines have been preserved at the top, bottom and left sides. The right side is broken off resulting in a loss of about three words in each line. There are some smaller holes in the papyrus causing a minimal loss of text.

Hands Written with a thin pen in black ink, perpendicular to the fibers on Recto, parallel to the fibers on Verso. There are some diacritical dots. Final m���m has a very short tail (l. 3 atamma). F���� is written with a dot under the letter (l. 4 fa-tursil; l. 8 bi-f��kiha; fa-innahu).

Peace be upon you and I praise for you God besides Whom there is no god ;3. but He. Further . . . . May] God honor you and complete His benefaction on you and may He attire you with His well-keeping and may His munificence do you good. ;4. I ask God for you, may God preserve you] and may He grant you enjoyment through your life, that you become better and more beautiful. And send me a din��r worth of advance payments ;5. with so and so who] brings you this letter of mine. And write to Abu Dawud for he ;6. . . . ] . . then he returned and he made me also a symmachos, I ask God for you ;7. and for us that he continues His sup]ort. And peace be upon you and the mercy of God. Definitely send to me ;8. . . . ] send to me the boys with the fruit for I do not have a[ny.
